The process of creating a laminate is lamination, which in common parlance refers to the placing of something between layers of plastic and applying heat or cold and/or pressure, usually with an adhesive. Proper laminating can prevent fading from sunlight or other bright lights, destructive Ultra-Violet rays, fingerprints and smudging from simple handling, pollutants, and even the vapors from smoke, cleaning solutions, and other harmful atmospheric elements. If you truly care about a piece of artwork, and choose not to frame it, the only real way to ensure its safety is to laminate the image.

American Sleep Academy - What Does it Mean to You?

!: American Sleep Academy - What Does it Mean to You?

Like any other ailment, insomnia is a health issue that sufferers want taken care of by competent and experienced doctors. Luckily, there is already an association whose goal is to make sure insomniacs and other sleep disorder victims get the quality care they deserve.

The American Sleep Academy, or the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, has become a prominent fixture in the world of sleep science. According to their website, it was first established in 1975 as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. Since then, it has developed into the largest society of clinicians, researchers and health care providers in the field of sleep medicine, and now has over 7,000 members.

The main function of The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is accreditation. Sleep centers across the United States seek accreditation from the AASM, as many help seekers know that this is something to look for in a sleep center. These can be part of a hospital or academic institution, or be independently or physician owned. Either way they are eligible for AASM accreditation.

For the sleep center, earning AASM accreditation isn't easy. First, they must apply for five year accreditation, at which time a sleep specialist is sent out to inspect the center. This specialist investigates personnel and services and submits a report to the accreditation committee, said the AASM website. This process can take up to four to six months.

Also, new sleep centers can apply for provisional accreditation. In this process, centers and labs have six months to build a good history of customer service and care, after which they become eligible for full accreditation.

Another function of AASM involves insurance companies. They encourage health insurance providers such as Medicare to recognize the difference between accredited sleep centers and non-accredited ones. As a result, some insurance companies only cover costs incurred at AASM accredited centers and labs.

AASM accredited its first sleep center in 1977, and has now accredited more than 1,500 centers and labs in the United States.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine also has an educational function, including webinars and classes. Also, it does a large amount of research and publishes the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

If you are having sleep problems and in search of a high quality sleep center, AASM accreditation is an important thing to look for.

Sleep Tips

!: Sleep Tips

In a course I was facilitating, the discussion came around to mental health and wellbeing. The one constant that was a block for most people in the room, was lack of quality sleep. All were parents, and like most people, were riding the rollercoaster of life's challenges. The excuses for not being able to sleep included, trauma, the loss of a loved one, financial worries, depression and a busy mind. In other words, stress was a major factor in most of them being unable to sleep at night and for most, they had been struggling with this for a long time. Through trial and error, I have come up with some techniques that I have found helped me.

Most nights I try to wind down for at least an hour before turning in and avoid stimulants. A warm bath, not too hot or cold, with a relaxing scent can help my body unwind. I find that a cup of warm milk with a sprinkling of nutmeg seems to help me sleep. A drop of Marjoram Essential Oil on each corner of my pillow case has helped me sleep, particularly in times of distress or trauma. Alternatively, a sleep cushion, filled with relaxing herbs can help. Watching my breathing and consciously relaxing my body, starting with my feet and finishing with my head has given me better results than counting sheep. I mentally think of all the people and things in my life I appreciate - this prepares me, from a vibration standpoint, for a positive attitude upon waking. Darkness triggers chemicals which induce sleep (however I have a vivid imagination and am afraid of the dark so I leave a very low night light plugged in). I try to ensure that the room temperature is comfortable and the duvet warm enough but not too warm! I make sure that the bedroom is uncluttered and I don't have a television or computer in my bedroom. If I still can't sleep, I get up and make a list of things which are on my mind, write something in my journal - anything that helps me to get stuff out of my head and down on paper before returning to bed. I find it best if I don't nap during the day or sleep in when I've had a disturbed night, it makes it harder to get into a sleep routine and my body clock gets out of whack.

Generally a combination of the above actions have helped me in the past, but if you find that nothing is working, then I would encourage you to check with your GP just in case there is an underlying condition which is making it difficult for you to sleep.
